Numbers & Assessments: Scorpions FC At Mid-SeasonDavid Casarez on 8 July 2012 in Scorpions FC
You didn’t expect it. I didn’t expect. Honestly, I’m sure deep down the organization didn’t expect it.
San Antonio’s newest darling, Scorpions FC, sit three points above their competition in the North American Soccer League standings at the season’s mid-point.
Here are a few numbers to chew on as San Antonio turns the corner for the second half:
13,151- Fan attendance at the home opener vs Puerto Rico
10- Game unbeaten streak lasting from 4/21-6/16
8- League leading wins
2- Losses. Fewest in league
10- Goal differential. League leading
12- Goals allowed. Fewest in the league
9- Shutouts. Most in league
8- Shutouts by goalkeeper Daryl Sattler. Most in league
.54- Goals against average by Darly Sattler. League leader
8- Goals scored by Pablo Campos. Team leader
4- Assists by Esteban Bayona. Team Leader
38- Shots taken by Hans Dennisen. Team Leader
First Half Offensive MVP: Midfielder Esteban Bayona
Brazilian Forward Pablo Campos is the popular choice for leading the team in goals, but the Columbian gets the easy nod here.
Campos has a 6th sense around the mouth of the goal, but also possesses a disturbing tendency to take every other play off, directly the opposite of Bayona.
Bayona’s midfield presence to defend and create opportunities has been the spark plug the Scorpions lacked early in the season. His speed on both sides of the ball have opponent’s heads on a swivel throughout the pitch.
Bayona is 2nd in the league in assists (4) and 2nd on the team in goals (4). Watch him play and any fan will understand why the Columbian and Incarnate Word University product is the Crocketteer’s Mid-Season Offensive MVP.
First Half Defensive MVP: GK Daryl Sattler
After Pat Hannigan went down in the season’s second game, it was unclear how stable the Scorpion’s netminder position would be.
Insert Daryl Sattler.
Sattler surpassed all expectations and shed the back-up role stigma, as he leads the league in Goals Against Average.
Sattler is fortunate to have a strong midfield and steady defensive line to prevent shots-on-goals, but when called upon, Sattler has stonewalled nearly everything that has come his way, easily the Crocketteer’s Defensive MVP thus far.
