Inaugural Season Brings List of Firsts

As we head into the playoffs, we look back at the San Antonio Scorpions inaugural season in the North American Soccer League.

First kick off of the season.

There are the obvious “firsts” like first goal, first win, or first shutout. Those were destined to occur and only took four games to complete. The Scorpions scored their first three goals and picked up 5 of their final 47 points of the season during those four games.

Janicki celebrates one of his goals during the 8-0 rout over the Carolina Railhawks.

Of course, other sensational “firsts” could be found this season. Surely you remember the 8-0 win over the Carolina Railhawks that NASL calls “the most lopsided win in NASL history.” That game alone was the only time the team had scored three goals in the first half and only time Pablo Campos had scored four goals in a single match.

Our first game of the season also brought our one and only sold out crowd where over 13,000 spectators packed into Heroes Stadium to cheer on the new Scorpions.

In a list such as this, two other extremely important additions must be made: the San Antonio Scorpions had their first US Open Cup win and their first win versus an MLS opponent. The US Open Cup is the tournament that will measure the Scorpions against some of the better teams in the nation. A future win of this tournament would allow the team to represent the nation in the CONCACAF Champions League and face off against some of the best clubs in the region (including North America, Central America, and the Caribbean). The victory over the Houston Dynamo is one that helps the MLS take notice of San Antonio and future wins will only cement our claim to move into the MLS rankings.

Now, there are some other “firsts” the team has not yet achieved. Most worrisome is the fact that the Scorpions have never come from behind to win a game. The home match against Fort Lauderdale Strikers in April provided a thrilling end when Hans Denissen scored in the 90th minute to level the score. After several other late-game heroics brought the same ending this season, one might expect to find a win where the opponent had scored first. It can’t be found.

A lot of credit must be given to the defense and goalie who only allowed 27 goals against this season – leading the league. However, heading into our first ever playoff match makes one hope that either the Scorpions continue scoring first or overcome their inability to produce that great effort. Thus, I challenge the team: Prove that you have what it takes to win the championship. What outcome will surface in our inaugural season?

San Antonio Scorpions celebrate winning their first trophy by becoming 2012 NASL Regular Season Champions.

With that said, the coming series versus the Minnesota Stars can provide our first playoff win in our first ever season. Can you list any additional “firsts” in the comments below?
